Future may bring us one second 0-100% smartphone charging
We are at a point where we can charge our smartphone in only 15 minutes. Well, that’s at least true if you have 150W charging available for your device. That is the case with the Realme GT Neo 3, for example, which comes from Realme, OPPO’s sister company. That device can also charge up to 50% in only 5 minutes. A couple of years ago such numbers looked out of reach. Well, we’re at that point now, but it seems like the charging technology doesn’t have a limit. Tian said: “As a technical engineer in the fast-charging field, for me, my work is to break limits. We will continue to explore until one day phones can be fully charged in one second”. Just to be clear, that point is not close. OPPO is not close to achieving it or anything of the sort, but Edward Tian does see a possibility for it. We likely have a long way to go to get there, though.
There are a lot of obstacles to reach 1 second charging
Tian did point out that reaching such points is not easy. He said: “Increasing the charging speed is not the most challenging part [of this one-second goal]. To bring a good fast charging experience to users, we have to take more aspects into consideration, such as safety, charging temperature, the energy density of the battery cell, the size of the charger, battery lifespan, etc.” Edward Tian also gave some advice for charging habits. He said that some users like to keep the battery at 100% or 0% for a long time. That can damage the battery. The same goes for using your phone at high temperature. That’s not exactly news, but it’s worth mentioning once again. Smartphones do come equipped to avoid such scenarios, though, so it’s not much of a problem for users. A lot of phones have the option to charge to a certain point, or orientate themselves towards your alarm, etc. If you’d like to check out the full Edward Tian interview, click here.
