The use of Custom ROMs may be less common these days, but there are still people who may want to use them. Increased security is one of the important reasons for customers’ tendency towards Custom ROMs. To date, there have been many projects that claim to want to build a secure, Google-independent phone. However, they did not yield any results, and the project was stopped after a while. However, GrapheneOS seems to be more serious. The company made a statement on its Twitter page, saying they want to collaborate with an unnamed OEM to launch their phone. “We are going to be collaborating with a hardware vendor to get a device produced with comparable security and support for alternative operating systems as Pixels.”
GrapheneOS is not going to sell refurbished phones
Companies that claim to sell secure phones usually do not turn to direct production and prefer to run their own software on other companies’ phones. An example of this project is the / e / OS. Mentioning Pixel phones by GrapheneOS has a reason. The company was known as CopperheadOS before, and it sold Pixel phones preloaded with its software. Now, the company reportedly wants to launch a completely new, secure phone through partnering with a third-party OEM. We still know nothing about the possible OEM that wants to help GrapheneOS. Some Chinese OEMs might help. But it’s evident that the GrapheneOS phone is bare of Google apps and services as it is focused on security and privacy. Moreover, the phone is definitely not mass-produced and comes in limited numbers. GrapheneOS noted in its announcement that it would release more details about the project in the coming months.
