Hackers ask the victims to call “*67<10 digit number> or 405<10 digit number>”. After making a call, hackers can easily take control of the victims’ accounts. Victims also usually do not notice that their account has been hacked because there is no specific trace. The mechanism of this hacking method is similar to the WhatsApp OTP scam that targeted many accounts last year.
The WhatsApp scam involves calling a specific number
Cyber security expert Rahul Sasi found the new scam. He says this is one of the simplest and also most successful ways to hack someone’s account because few people would think that hackers can gain control of their account by calling a number. “Once the hacker gets access to the account, they request the victim’s contacts for money. In this manner, the attacker defrauds the victim’s WhatsApp contacts even before the victim realizes that they have lost control of their account. Since service providers across the globe use numbers that begin with’ 67′ or ‘405’, victims are wont to place the call without hesitation,” said Rahul Sasi. Of course, there are some ways to protect your account. The easiest way is to remember the numbers mentioned above. Don’t accept any dialing request to these numbers from people you don’t know – or maybe even that you do know. Also, if an unknown person asks you to call such numbers, you should know that you are at risk of being hacked. Moreover, enabling 2-step verification and setting up a password or PIN to log in are other things you can do for extra protection.
