We couldn’t independently verify the contents of the video. The brand or make of the smartphone is unclear from the video. But it appears to be a Samsung phone with a flip cover installed. Some commenters on YouTube, Twitter, and Reddit jokingly claim this could’ve been a Nokia phone, based on the old notion that Nokia phones are indestructible.
Not the first instance of a smartphone saving someone from a bullet
Of course, this is not the first time a smartphone saved someone’s life. Turning back to 2013, we discover an incident wherein a Florida store clerk was saved by the HTC EVO 3D in his front pocket when a burglar shot at him after a failed robbery attempt. Shortly after, HTC sent the store clerk a care package, including a brand new HTC One and some other goodies. In 2016, the Huawei P8 Lite saved a man’s life in South Africa during another robbing attempt. The victim, Siraaj Abrahams, was shot on his way home from a party. Before shooting Mr. Abrahams, the miscreants robbed around $20 worth of cash from him. Although the victim fainted shortly after being shot, he was left only with a minor bullet mark. Needless to say, the phone was destroyed. Huawei went above and beyond in taking care of the victim in this case. In addition to offering a P9 Lite smartphone, Huawei’s Marketing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa took Mr. Abrahams and his family out for lunch and offered free VIP entry to all home games of local soccer team Ajax Cape Town. Separately, we’ve seen multiple YouTubers test out the durability of phones using a bullet test, i.e., shooting directly at a phone to see if it survives. In almost all cases, the phone doesn’t survive. Maybe that will change in the future.
